New map tool compares zoning disparities around the state

The New Hampshire Zoning Atlas, launching online at nhzoningatlas.org, maps out zoning regulations across 269 jurisdictions. This $100,000 project, involving over 20 contributors, reveals varied local rules like Kingston's four-parking-space requirement for single-family homes and Amherst's large land requirements for multi-family housing. Key insights include heavy restrictions on small-lot single-family homes, with only 16% of buildable land zoned for such use, and more than half of zoning districts banning larger multi-family buildings. The Atlas aims to help communities understand regional zoning practices and address housing shortages by promoting more balanced development.
